"Society has long told us that we shouldn’t be comfortable in our own skin and that we should cover up our bodies. Putting myself out there like this was my way of going against the grain, exploring, taking control, and learning to love my nude body."

Artist's Statement - Taylor Carpenter - October, 2022

Aloha! My name is Taylor Carpenter. I’m a professional parkour & acrobatics athlete from Hawai’i. I’m so excited to share these photos with you.
The Rationale:
The plan for this shoot was to combine the empowerment of my movement with the empowerment of nudity. I wanted to shoot outside because a lot of my movement is done outside.
There are many factors that went into the creation of these images, but here are the ones that I find the most important to share with you:
- Body image, self love & empowerment
- My views on nudity
- Taking control over my body
Like many others, I have struggled with negative body image and self-esteem for as long as I can remember. Society has long told us that we shouldn’t be comfortable in our own skin and that we should cover up our bodies. Putting myself out there like this was my way of going against the grain, exploring, taking control, and learning to love my nude body.
I want to do my part in ending the stigma around nudity. Especially for women. I believe that women have the right to feel comfortable in our own bodies. And that starts with me. If I can become more confident and self-assured, I can help other women do the same. I wanted these photos to display nudity in a non-sexual, and powerful way. In the end, nudity is just having a body… and we all have bodies.
I believe that everyone should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies. My movement has helped me embody that. And if I want to do a shoot nude shoot, then that is my choice and my right to do so.
The Shoot:
The shoot itself was hands down my favorite shoot I have done. I don’t think there are many people who can say they have balanced on wobbly, splintering wooden structures while trying to slather baby oil on themselves in the wind. I felt creative and empowered.
The first time I saw the proofs, I was frozen for a second. I’ve seen myself naked countless times, but I have never seen myself like this. I saw a woman who is strong… brave… empowered.
Acknowledgements:
Thank you to Mike and his assistant, Jenn, for making the shoot amazing. Thank you to my partner, Ryan, for supporting me in everything that I do. Thank you to everyone who decides to support us and this project. It is a really scary thing to put myself out there like this, but I’m excited to share these images with the world rather than having them collect dust on a hard drive.
